Nigeria calls for UN and financial system reform at BRICS summit
Nigeria, at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India, called for reform of the United Nations and the international financial system. Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, said that the global political structure must reflect contemporary political and economic realities, Premium Times Nigeria reports.
Reforming global governance
Shettima stressed the need to reform the UN Security Council in order to create a fairer and more responsive international political system. According to him, Nigeria's call for institutions that take into account current economic and demographic realities reflects the demand of Global South countries for a more inclusive international order.
“The transformation we seek must extend to the international system,” the vice president said. He added that Nigeria supports a more representative, equitable and responsive global governance architecture, including reform of the UN Security Council and the international financial system.

Cooperation with BRICS
Nigeria's representative also called for stronger bilateral and multilateral cooperation among BRICS countries. According to him, the purpose of Nigeria's participation in the partnership is to develop mutually beneficial cooperation, strengthen ties among countries of the South and advance Africa's development priorities.
Shettima named trade, agriculture, food security, energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare and critical minerals among the areas of possible cooperation. He also called on partners to cooperate with Nigeria in the development of artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, fintech, telecommunications, cybersecurity, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing.
According to the vice president, developing countries must produce technologies, create knowledge and own intellectual property. Nigeria joined BRICS as a partner country last year and views cooperation with the grouping as an opportunity to attract investment, transfer technology and develop human capital.
