Germany has reached an agreement with the U.S. to purchase Tomahawk missiles

The German government has reached an agreement with the United States regarding the purchase of American Tomahawk cruise missiles and their deployment on German territory.

This was announced by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to him, the agreement is intended to strengthen Germany’s defense capabilities and bolster the country’s military potential.

“In addition, on the sidelines of the NATO meeting in Ankara, we agreed with the U.S. government that we will purchase American Tomahawk missiles and deploy them in Germany,” Merz said.

He added that this should close an important strategic gap in Germany’s defense.

“At the same time, we will work to develop our own European systems and deploy them in Europe,” the chancellor said.

Merz emphasized that NATO remains a transatlantic alliance, but Europeans must take greater responsibility for their own security.

“We Europeans are strong too, and we have realized that we cannot simply outsource our security. We are responsible for our own security,” the German chancellor stated.

According to the chancellor, the results of the NATO summit in Ankara “exceeded all his expectations.”

Merz also noted that Germany intends to reach the defense spending target of 5% of GDP “well ahead of” the set deadline. He said such spending is necessary to guarantee freedom and peace in Europe.

“The best social security system is worthless if we do not live in freedom and peace. That is why, for me and for us in this coalition, ensuring freedom and peace in Europe is a priority,” the German chancellor stated.

The chancellor separately emphasized that strengthening defense capabilities is also important for German industry. He mentioned Canada’s decision to modernize its submarine fleet with the help of Germany and Norway and to purchase up to 12 submarines from TKMS.

“This is the largest international defense contract in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, which will generate up to 100 billion euros in added value over the coming decades,” said Merz.

German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz made this statement on Thursday in the Bundestag, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.

Merz spoke of a growing rift between the U.S. and Europe.

Merz spoke of a new spirit within NATO following the summit in Ankara.
