Germany Opens a New Center for UAV Research

A new research center is opening in Germany that will focus on drone technology and countermeasures. The facility is located in Kochstedt, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, near Magdeburg.

The new center will operate under the auspices of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Its official opening is scheduled to take place with the participation of Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt, Minister of Research and Technology Dorothea Ber, and Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt Sven Schulze.

The center’s specialists will research new safety technologies related to drones and test them under conditions that closely resemble real-world scenarios. The goal is to combine scientific research with the practical needs of German law enforcement and security agencies.

Germany is paying particular attention to drones equipped with artificial intelligence-based control systems. Such drones can continue moving toward a designated target even after losing communication with the operator, which makes them much more difficult to intercept.

Another area of focus will be the identification of different types of drones. This should make it possible to more quickly determine the nature of the threat and apply the most effective countermeasures against a specific drone.

The need to develop these capabilities in Germany became particularly acute following a recent incident at Leipzig Airport, where a drone carrying explosives was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes. German prosecutors described this incident as a serious threat to the country’s transportation and logistics infrastructure.

The German Ministry of the Interior emphasizes that strengthening protection against drones requires large-scale research, development, and constant monitoring of technological advancements. The new center in Kochstadt is set to become one of the key elements of this effort.

As a reminder, the Ukrainian-American company Swarmer is integrating its drone swarm control system with the SpatialCore platform from the American company Brightline Interactive. This collaboration will allow the combat experience of Ukrainian drones to be used to train artificial intelligence models being developed for the U.S. Department of Defense.

In addition, the United States and Ukraine have signed an agreement providing for the export of Ukrainian land, air, and sea drones to the U.S. for military testing. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported this, citing sources in Washington.
