Germany has responded to the U.S. decision to withdraw its troops
The U.S. plans to withdraw about 5,000 troops from Germany, and this is already shifting the conversation about security in Europe. Officials in Berlin acknowledge that the continent will have to strengthen its own defenses more quickly and more significantly to compensate for the gradual reduction in the American presence. This is according to Reuters.
The Pentagon’s decision to withdraw approximately 5,000 American troops from Germany was a signal that Berlin perceived not as a technical reduction, but as another step toward a long-term change in Europe’s security architecture. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated outright that European countries will have to take on more responsibility for their own defense, as they can no longer count on a stable and permanent U.S. presence.
According to Pistorius, Germany is already moving toward strengthening its defense by expanding the Bundeswehr, increasing arms purchases, and modernizing military infrastructure. He emphasized that this is not a one-time reaction but a long process of restructuring the security system, in which Europe must gradually learn to act more autonomously.
At the same time, the minister stressed that Europe has no interest in completely abandoning the American presence, as it remains a key element of deterrence. “The presence of American soldiers in Europe, and especially in Germany, serves our interests and those of the United States,” he noted, adding that cooperation with Washington remains an important foundation of security.
Pistorius also acknowledged that the reduction of the American contingent may continue in the future, and the current decision is only the first step. Against this backdrop, Germany is forced to accelerate defense reforms, as nearly 40,000 U.S. troops are currently stationed on its territory, and a key NATO command center is located at Ramstein Air Base, which is critical for U.S. operations in Europe and beyond.
In Berlin, the view is becoming increasingly clear that the era of automatic military reliance on the U.S. is gradually coming to an end, and Europe is entering a phase where its security increasingly depends on its own decisions, resources, and the speed of rearmament.
The Pentagon has decided to withdraw approximately 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany. The process is planned to be carried out over the next six to twelve months. This is part of a review of U.S. force deployments in Europe.
