New York and New Jersey declare state of emergency over nor’easter — The Hill

In the United States, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill declared states of emergency ahead of a nor’easter approaching the region’s coast. As The Hill reports, a state of emergency was introduced in New York in Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as in New York City and Westchester County.

Risk of flooding and power outages

Kathy Hochul said the region is expecting dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds and possible power outages over the weekend. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill later declared a state of emergency in Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem counties. She urged state residents to take the severe weather seriously, monitor alerts and follow local authorities’ recommendations.

Evacuation and weather forecast

In the coastal borough of Manasquan, New Jersey, local authorities recommended voluntary evacuation for residents of low-lying areas, especially elderly people and people with special needs. According to The Weather Channel, wind gusts exceeding 30 mph were recorded on Friday along the coasts of New York and New Jersey, and reached up to 52 mph on Long Island.

The National Weather Service forecast moderate and, in some places, significant flooding throughout the weekend, including in several New York counties. City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the storm’s expected track had shifted closer to New York, which could bring heavier precipitation and stronger winds.
