Norway summoned the Russian ambassador over threats against diplomats
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador for an official meeting to express its strong protest. This move was prompted by Moscow’s recent statements, which contained direct threats against foreign personnel and diplomatic missions in Ukraine.
This was stated by Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.
The senior Russian diplomat met with the head of the security policy department at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the meeting, the European side strongly condemned the large-scale airstrike on Kyiv that took place on the night of May 24. The head of Norway’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that Russia’s use of a large number of drones, as well as the first combat use of “Oreshnik”-type missiles against the Ukrainian capital, is absolutely unacceptable. According to Eide, he and the Norwegian Prime Minister have already publicly condemned these aggressive actions by the Kremlin.
Oslo’s reaction came in response to new rhetoric from the Russian leadership: following the strikes this weekend, Russia began openly threatening new attacks on Kyiv and “recommending” that foreign diplomats urgently leave the city. NATO and European countries view these statements as a brazen escalation and have already begun to publicly respond to the threats. In addition to diplomatic pressure, Russia has simultaneously intensified its offensive operations on the southern front in Ukraine. Meanwhile, strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the occupiers’ logistics hubs are causing Russian forces to grow nervous even in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of the aggressor state, the Russian Federation, stated during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Russia is “launching strikes on targets in Kyiv.”
