OPEC+ agreed to a symbolic increase in oil production amid the war in Iran

OPEC+ agreed to a symbolic increase in oil production amid the war in Iran

The OPEC+ alliance of leading oil-producing countries has reached a preliminary decision to increase production quotas starting in May 2026.

This move was a response to the protracted crisis in the Middle East, which has effectively blocked a significant portion of global exports.

According to Bloomberg, during a virtual meeting on Sunday, April 5, delegates agreed to increase production by approximately 206,000 barrels per day.

However, analysts call this decision purely symbolic, as actual supply volumes remain critically low.

A large-scale military conflict involving Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have resulted in the alliance’s largest members being physically unable to meet even current production quotas.

Damage to infrastructure and risks to the tanker fleet have made exporting oil from the Persian Gulf extremely dangerous.

OPEC+, which includes the Gulf states, Venezuela, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Brazil, is trying to demonstrate to the market its readiness to stabilize prices.

However, resource shortages and the threat of new attacks on oil refineries continue to drive prices higher.

As a reminder, OPEC oil exports plummeted to a record low in March.

OPEC+ also plans to increase oil production—Russia may strengthen its position.
