Palestinians have faced sexual violence in Israeli prisons — NYT

According to investigations and reports by human rights organizations, Palestinian prisoners allegedly face cruel treatment at the hands of Israeli prison guards, military personnel, and interrogators, including allegations of sexual violence. Israel has previously condemned the atrocities committed by Hamas, but these allegations are now sparking intense international debate over the methods used to detain prisoners.

This is reported in an article by The New York Times.

Victims describe gang rapes, the use of foreign objects, sexual humiliation, and threats of violence against family members. The violence is directed at men, women, and even minors. The organization Save the Children notes that more than half of the surveyed teenagers who were in custody had experienced or witnessed sexual violence. Such actions are often used as a tool of pressure to recruit informants or intimidate communities in order to seize land.

Although there are no direct orders from senior leadership to rape, human rights activists emphasize the atmosphere of complete impunity. Even in cases where video evidence of abuse exists, charges against military personnel are often dropped, which Israeli officials refer to as “protecting heroic fighters.” National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir publicly justifies the harsh conditions of detention for Palestinians, whom he calls “Nazis,” which only reinforces the dehumanization of the prisoners.

Since American tax dollars subsidize Israel’s security apparatus, the U.S. is effectively complicit in these violations. Critics note that the Trump administration and other Western leaders must demand the resumption of Red Cross visits and make military aid contingent on respect for human rights. Sexual violence is unacceptable regardless of who the victim is, and sweeping these facts under the rug only contributes to perpetuating the cycle of violence in the region.

As a reminder, special forces dispersed pro-Palestinian demonstrators at the University of Amsterdam who were protesting Israel’s military operation in Gaza, which is directed against the terrorist group Hamas following its attack on the Jewish state on October 7, 2023.

The University of Amsterdam contacted the police regarding acts of vandalism during the latest pro-Palestinian protest.

The Dutch House of Representatives called on the government to criminalize the pro-Palestinian slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”
