Pope Leo XIV arrives in Metz for speech on European unity — France 24
Pope Leo XIV arrived in the French city of Metz on the final day of his four-day visit to France. His program included a speech on peace and European unity at the Robert Schuman Convention Center, as well as a Mass at Saint-Étienne Cathedral, which French President Emmanuel Macron was expected to attend.
Interfaith meeting
During a meeting with representatives of different religions in Metz, the pontiff said that religious discourse must contribute to the “disarmament of hearts and words.” He stressed that invoking the name of God to justify violence or oppression is a desecration of that name, and that anything that distorts human dignity cannot be truly inspired by God.
The speech was preceded by the reading of the “Metz Appeal” — a joint declaration by representatives of France’s religious communities in support of interfaith dialogue and peace.

Program in Metz
As France 24 reports, the Pope’s speech was titled “At the Sources of Europe for Peace and Unity.” Macron was also expected to attend it.
Following the speech, the program included a popemobile procession to the cathedral, Mass at 16:00, and departure for Rome from Metz-Nancy-Lorraine Airport at 19:00. The Élysée Palace said Macron had changed his schedule to attend the service and the farewell ceremony for the pontiff.
Metz, in northeastern France, is associated with Robert Schuman, who is considered one of the founders of the European Union. He is buried near the city.
