The Lithuanian Parliament has approved the deployment of troops to the Strait of Hormuz — LRT

The Lithuanian Seimas has approved a decision to deploy up to 40 military personnel and civilian staff to participate in international missions aimed at ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The Lithuanian contingent will join international operations aimed at supporting stability and security in one of the world’s most important maritime routes.

The bill was passed by the Seimas on Thursday with 77 votes in favor. 11 members voted against it, and 6 abstained.

Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated that Lithuania is considering providing assistance in the form of mine-clearing equipment, drone control systems, surveillance equipment, and other specialized resources.

He noted that Lithuania intends to participate in both the Franco-British coalition and a separate U.S.-led mission operating in the region, describing this deployment as a defense contribution to maritime security and energy stability.

He noted that any disruptions to shipping through the strait would affect oil and energy prices across Europe.

Some lawmakers opposed the decision, citing the mission’s lack of clarity and the risk of being drawn into a broader regional conflict. Supporters argued that such a deployment is standard NATO practice, and that specific tasks are determined by the allies.

Laurynas Kasčiūnas, leader of the opposition Conservatives, spoke candidly about what is at stake.

“Right now, the Americans are deciding on the military configuration here, in our country, and across Europe—in other words, the architecture of their presence. If we don’t approve this mission now, it will send a very bad signal. If we want American soldiers to remain in Lithuania, the Seimas must approve this mission,” he told reporters after the vote, according to LRT.
