Estonia’s Reform Party to contest elections with PM Michal — ERR News

Estonia’s Reform Party plans to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections led by incumbent Prime Minister Kristen Michal. Riigikogu member Liina Kersna said she considers winning 20 seats in parliament an achievable goal.

According to ERR News, the Reform Party parliamentary group currently has 37 members and is the largest in the Riigikogu. At the same time, Kersna acknowledged that it would be difficult to repeat the party’s previous record result.

The party’s election goal

According to Kersna, support for the Reform Party is growing, but after the elections its parliamentary group is unlikely to be as large as it is now. She described 20 seats in the Riigikogu as a fully achievable result, while winning more than 20 seats would be an excellent outcome.

The lawmaker also said that the ratings had become a clear signal from voters for the party. In her view, support for the four major parties could be roughly equal ahead of the elections, with the contest focused on first place.

Kersna called rumors about a possible change of the Reform Party’s leader or her nomination as a candidate for prime minister political speculation. She stressed that the party would go into the elections with incumbent head of government Kristen Michal, who, in her assessment, has shown initiative and renewed the composition of the government.

At the same time, Kersna did not rule out that she could run for party chair in the future if she had the support of Reform Party members and voters and considered it beneficial for Estonia and the party.

Commenting on the failed ammunition procurement, Kersna said that the government and the Riigikogu’s finance committee should have been informed about the risks. In her view, the scandal could undermine public trust in the need for defense spending. She also stressed the need to continue supporting Ukraine, as a possible victory by Russia, the aggressor state, in Ukraine would, she said, create a significant security threat to Europe and Estonia.
