Pashinyan Has Approved a Referendum on Armenia's Accession to the EU
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a phone call with Vladimir Putin that a referendum on the country’s accession to the European Union is possible, but only after Armenia officially submits its application for EU membership.
The conversation between the leaders took place on July 27 and was their first since the parliamentary elections held in Armenia in June.
According to the Armenian government, during the talks, Pashinyan raised the issue of restrictions that Russia has imposed on imports of Armenian products. He emphasized that such measures contradict existing bilateral agreements as well as the rules of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
At the same time, the Kremlin reported that Putin drew attention to the need to determine the country’s foreign policy course as soon as possible, proposing to hold a referendum on joining the European Union or Armenia’s continued membership in the EAEU.
The Armenian government’s press service clarified that Pashinyan responded that such a referendum would be possible only after an official application for EU membership had been submitted.
“A referendum is possible, but only after the country officially submits an application for membership in the European Union,” the Armenian prime minister stated, according to the government.
Local media also noted that Russia did not congratulate Nikol Pashinyan on his political party’s victory in the parliamentary elections held in June.

Earlier, on July 26, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Ukraine would not be able to join the European Union with symbols that, in his opinion, contradict the historical memory of some European countries.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi held a meeting with the European Union’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternová. The head of government reported on the conversation on the social media platform X, according to “European Truth.”
