Pashinyan has raised the possibility of Armenia leaving the CSTO

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the country could withdraw from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) if it deems it necessary.

Pashinyan discussed the prospects of CSTO membership during a pre-election debate with Narik Karapetyan, a representative of the “Strong Armenia” bloc.

His opponent pointed out that Armenia has effectively suspended its participation in the organization and is not paying its dues, stating: “If it doesn’t work, leave.”

At the same time, he emphasized that before leaving the CSTO, the country should establish new security guarantees in its relations with Azerbaijan.

In response, the prime minister stated that Armenia would make the decision on its own:

Well, we’ll leave the CSTO. Are you trying to scare us? Neither you nor your uncle will decide. We’ll decide and we’ll leave. And the guarantor is Armenia—the state, the army,” Pashinyan said.

“We will decide; foreign agents will not decide what to do,” he added.

Pashinyan has repeatedly criticized the organization and its allies, particularly the Russian leadership. In previous statements, he has expressed declining confidence in collective security mechanisms and has sharply criticized statements by certain politicians commenting on the situation in Armenia.
