US proposes expanding UN arms embargo to all of Sudan
The United States has proposed expanding the current UN embargo on arms supplies to Sudan’s Darfur region to cover the entire territory of Sudan. The initiative was presented by US envoy Massad Boulos during a UN Security Council meeting in New York, Deutsche Welle English reports.
According to Boulos, the US proposes expanding the embargo both geographically and in terms of the list of restrictions. The plan provides for the inclusion of drones and related technologies, as well as an increase in the number of experts who will monitor compliance with the embargo.
The Security Council must make the decision
The embargo on arms supplies to Darfur has been in force for two decades. If it is not amended or extended, it will expire on September 12, 2026. A UN Security Council vote is required to extend the restrictions to the entire country.
Sudan’s representative to the UN, Al-Harith Idris Al-Harith Mohamed, called on Security Council members to support a “technical extension” of the current regime. At the same time, he warned against changes that, according to him, could weaken the capabilities of the Sudanese army and the protection of civilians.

Russia’s position and the UN assessment
Russia, an aggressor state that holds veto power in the UN Security Council, reacted skeptically to a possible revision of the embargo. Moscow said that extending the restrictions to all of Sudan could affect the effectiveness of the Sudanese army.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said that the conflict in Sudan is becoming increasingly complex. According to her, the use of modern weapons indicates ongoing external support for both sides.
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher also said that in recent weeks, hostilities have been characterized by the active use of drones and localized ground fighting in areas less affected by the rainy season.
The war in Sudan is in its fourth year, has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, and forced millions of civilians to flee their homes. The army controls the country’s central and eastern regions, while western areas of Sudan and parts of southern Darfur are under the control of the Rapid Support Forces.
