Beijing pastry shop overwhelmed by shoppers after Xi Jinping’s visit

The Beijing pastry shop Daoxiangcun, visited by Xi Jinping during his pre-New Year city tour this week, was overrun by customers eager to buy the "sweets chosen by the Chinese leader."

It was reported earlier that Xi picked pastries with honey glaze, creamy filling, and layered cookies shaped like a jujube flower filled with red dates. Following media coverage in China, queues formed outside the store, and popular sets were packaged in “threes,” a reference to the Chinese leader’s name. On the same visit, Xi also stopped by another bakery — Yiili Bakery — where he bought fruit bread for 14 yuan (about $2), mentioning that he used to enjoy their butter buns as a child.

The frenzy highlights the brand’s popularity and the leader’s influence on consumer sentiment. Demand for these treats may continue to rise with the approaching holiday season.
