Talks between the U.S. and China in Beijing failed to produce results
U.S. President Donald Trump concluded his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing without announcing any specific agreements, despite expectations of trade and political decisions. The two sides reaffirmed their differing approaches to their relationship, and the agreements analysts had anticipated were never reached, according to The Wall Street Journal.
A two-day summit in Beijing involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping has concluded, after which the American leader left China and headed back to the U.S. However, the parties did not announce any specific agreements following the talks, despite expectations of potential decisions regarding trade and international security.
The meeting took place against a backdrop of diplomatic courtesy and ostentatious friendliness, but this masked significant differences in Washington’s and Beijing’s approaches to key issues, and the summit served as a test of the parties’ ability to move from political statements to actual agreements—a test that ultimately yielded no results. “By the time Trump left Beijing, it had not materialized,” notes The Wall Street Journal, commenting on the absence of any final agreement following the second day of talks.
Recall that earlier, Trump and Xi had agreed to a trade truce, postponing harsh measures, including tariffs exceeding 100% and restrictions on the export of technology and rare earth metals; however, even then, it was merely a temporary pause without a final resolution.
Following the current summit, there were no signs of progress toward a comprehensive trade agreement; instead, Trump invited Xi to visit Washington in September, which, according to analysts, could mark a new round of negotiations where the parties will again attempt to move closer to an agreement.
