Peter Magyar asserted Ukraine's right to defend itself against Russia

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has issued a new statement regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, outlined his vision for the conditions under which it could end, and commented on future relations between Kyiv and Budapest.

This was reported by the Hungarian publication HVG.

The Hungarian leader clearly affirmed that Ukraine has become the victim of a full-scale invasion and has the legitimate right to defend its borders. According to him, Ukraine is a victim and has every right to defend its territorial integrity.

In Magyar’s view, the first step toward ending hostilities should be a long-term ceasefire. He sees the next stage as achieving a stable peace, which must be backed by strong international security guarantees.

In this context, the Hungarian prime minister referenced the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, emphasizing that future security agreements must be significantly more reliable than previous ones, which failed to protect Ukraine from aggression.

Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, proposed expanding the Visegrád Group (V4) to include other countries.

Mátyás named the condition for opening the first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Péter Magyar will make his first foreign visit to Poland to meet with Tusk.
