British radio station apologizes for report of the king's death

In the UK, Radio Caroline issued an apology after mistakenly announcing the death of King Charles and playing the anthem "God Save the King."

The Independent reported this. Eventually, the broadcast was suddenly interrupted for 15 minutes, after which the hosts apologized for the mix-up.

It turned out that the announcement was made due to a computer error at the radio station’s main studio on Tuesday afternoon, May 19. Because of this glitch, the “Death of the Monarch” procedure—which all British stations keep on standby for emergencies—was accidentally activated. Station manager Peter Moore apologized on social media to His Majesty the King and listeners for any inconvenience. He added that Radio Caroline has been delighted to broadcast the monarchs’ Christmas messages and hopes to continue doing so for many years to come.

The false report sparked mixed reactions among listeners online. One commenter noted that it was a shock at first, but after talking with his wife and neighbors, he realized it was a mistake and started laughing. Another listener said he heard the news while working in the garage and ran home in a panic, shouting about Charles’s death. His wife reminded him, surprised, that the king had been at a flower show just yesterday, after which the couple checked news sites and joked about needing to give up alcohol for a while. In reality, on Tuesday, King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived in Belfast for their first visit to Northern Ireland this year, having spent the previous day at the Royal Chelsea Flower Show.
