South Korea discusses possible deployment of forces in the Strait of Hormuz
South Korea is preparing for the possible deployment of military assets to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and, according to media reports, aims to send them by the end of the year. This was reported by NDTV World, citing South Korean media that quoted government and military sources.
Possible formats of participation
According to media reports, the government is considering sending a maritime patrol aircraft, a logistics support vessel, or a unit for detecting and clearing naval mines.
The authorities are also reportedly preparing procedures to obtain parliamentary consent for the deployment. After consideration by the Cabinet this month, a corresponding request may be submitted to parliament.

Position of the presidential administration
South Korean media reported that Seoul discussed the scale and nature of the potential contribution with the United States, the United Kingdom and France. At the same time, South Korea's presidential administration said that the country is discussing practical ways to contribute to freedom of navigation in the strait, but reports that a decision on deployment has already been made do not correspond to the facts.
In an August social media post, US President Donald Trump said that he had partially reduced joint US-South Korean military exercises because Seoul had refused to help Washington in the war against Iran.
