South Korea holds emergency meeting after North Korean missile launches
In South Korea, the presidential National Security Office held an emergency meeting involving the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff after North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea.

As Korea Herald reports, the missiles were launched at around 5:20 a.m. near Wonsan in Kangwon Province. According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, they flew about 250 kilometers. South Korean and U.S. authorities are conducting a detailed analysis of the launches, including identifying the types of missiles.

Seoul's response
Participants in the emergency meeting reviewed the security implications of the launches, South Korea's response and possible further measures. The country's government condemned the launches as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and called on North Korea to immediately stop such provocations.
The launches occurred 23 days after North Korea fired ten missiles toward the East Sea from an area near Pyongyang on August 20. Local media suggest that the new launches may have been a response to the five-day Freedom Edge exercise involving South Korea, the United States and Japan, which began on September 7 in international waters southeast of Jeju Island. The exercise focuses on responding to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, as well as other regional security threats. It was the fourth such exercise since the series began in June 2024.
