South Korea has expanded public access to the border with North Korea – Reuters

The South Korean government has decided to move the Civilian Control Line (CCL) toward the demilitarized zone, significantly reducing the area of restricted zones where citizens require mandatory military permission to travel, reside, or engage in agricultural activities

Under the new rules, the boundary of the restricted zones will be moved northward—it will now run, on average, 6 kilometers from the Military Demarcation Line, instead of the current 8–10 kilometers. South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Kyu-bak announced this major revision of security regulations.

The defense minister explained that the reform is intended to ease daily life and protect the property rights of about 20,000 local residents and thousands of farmers who have for years complained about strict restrictions and suffered economic losses. The phased relocation of checkpoints, set to begin in 2027, will allow for the reclassification of approximately 270 square kilometers of land from the strict “controlled protection” zone to the significantly more lenient “restricted protection” category. The modernization of the border regime and the move away from outdated bureaucratic procedures have been made possible by the implementation of state-of-the-art 24/7 video surveillance systems, smart monitoring tools, and the upcoming launch of a mobile app for simplified digital verification of citizens at checkpoints.

Every year on June 6, South Korea observes Memorial Day—a national holiday dedicated to honoring military personnel and civilians who died for the country’s freedom, independence, and security.
