A boat carrying around 60 migrants capsized near Malta — The Guardian

A fishing boat carrying about 60 undocumented migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Malta.

At least ten people died when the boat capsized.

Most of the passengers were quickly rescued thanks to the efforts of the crew of a civilian vessel and Italian emergency services.

A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently underway in the disaster zone. This was officially reported by the Italian Coast Guard.

The vessel, which had initially set sail from the coast of Libya toward European Union countries, capsized approximately 45 nautical miles—about 83 kilometers—southeast of Malta.

A fishing boat that was in the same area managed to quickly rescue 48 survivors from the water. Italian specialists who arrived at the scene discovered the bodies of ten victims of the shipwreck while surveying the area.

The units involved in the rescue operations are coordinating their efforts with local government agencies.

The Guardian reports on this.
