Political crisis in Slovenia: President refuses to nominate a prime minister

Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar has stated that she will not nominate a candidate for prime minister following the first round of talks with the political parties.

Bloomberg reported this.

According to her, none of the potential candidates was able to secure the support of a majority in parliament—at least 46 votes.

“I do not want to nominate a candidate for the position of head of a minority government,” the president noted.

The situation leaves the country in political uncertainty following the March parliamentary elections, which did not produce a clear winner.

Incumbent Prime Minister Robert Golob stated that it was impossible to find coalition partners following the parliamentary elections, in which his party, the “Movement for Freedom,” secured a narrow victory. Now, the politician is preparing to work in the opposition and promises to strictly monitor compliance with the principles of the rule of law.

In Slovenia, Zoran Stevanović, leader of the anti-establishment, pro-Russian party Resni.ca, was elected speaker of parliament.
