Nigerian police order investigation into disruption of events by two opposition parties
Police in Nigeria’s southeastern Enugu State have ordered an investigation into reports of armed attacks that disrupted separate events of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). State Commissioner of Police Bitrus Giwa instructed officers to identify those involved in the two incidents.
Incidents in Nkanu West
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, both cases occurred on September 12 in the Nkanu West Local Government Area. In the Ndiuno-Obuoffia community, armed men, according to police, disrupted an NDC ward meeting by firing indiscriminately. Two people were reportedly injured as a result.
The second incident reportedly occurred at St. Joseph’s Primary School in Agbani. There, attackers destroyed tents and chairs prepared for a PDP rally.

Police actions
State police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said the organizers of the events had not notified law enforcement in advance about the need to provide security. After receiving the reports, police promptly deployed officers to both locations to prevent further disturbances and track down the attackers.
Giwa instructed the deputy commissioner of police heading the state Criminal Investigation Department to thoroughly investigate both episodes. According to police, the commissioner also reminded party leaders that political events must be held peacefully and in accordance with the law.
He warned parties, candidates, supporters and other participants in the political process against violence, intimidation, property destruction and actions capable of disrupting public order and the electoral process. Police called on political leaders to notify authorities in advance about campaigns, meetings, rallies and other gatherings so that appropriate security arrangements can be made.
