Polish F-16s intercepted a Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea
Polish F-16 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. According to the Polish Ministry of Defense, the aircraft was flying in international airspace without a flight plan and with its transponder turned off, but did not violate the country’s airspace.
Polish F-16 fighter jets took to the skies to intercept a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported the incident. According to him, the interception took place around noon on July 31. The Russian aircraft was detected approximately 40 kilometers north of the Polish city of Kołobrzeg.
The Polish Ministry of Defense noted that the Il-20 was flying in international airspace but was doing so in violation of the rules. Specifically, the aircraft was flying without a filed flight plan and with its transponder—which is used to identify aircraft—turned off.
Despite this, no violation of Polish airspace was recorded. Polish fighter jets intercepted the aircraft, monitoring the situation in accordance with safety procedures. “The Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland are continuously monitoring the situation and responding decisively to the actions of the Russian Federation, while maintaining close cooperation with our NATO allies. Airspace security remains our top priority,” emphasized Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Recently, NATO countries have been reporting an increasing number of interceptions of Russian military and reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. Such missions are conducted to monitor the air situation and prevent potential threats, even if Russian aircraft do not violate the state border. This was reported by Polish Defense Minister Vladislav Kosiniak-Kamysz on X.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated during a speech in the Sejm on July 31 that the opposition had allegedly begun to view Ukraine as an enemy instead of Russia. He made this statement in the context of a discussion about the incident involving a Russian missile.
