Poland is preparing a new €50 million aid package for Ukraine
Poland is preparing a new military aid package for Ukraine worth 50 million euros. It will include, in particular, air defense systems and equipment that the Polish army no longer uses.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the new aid package. According to him, the decision to prepare the assistance was made following a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the “Ramstein” format, which took place on September 8. The total value of the aid will amount to 50 million euros. Among other things, Ukraine will receive equipment to strengthen its air defense. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense also reported on the preparation of the package following the allies’ meeting.
Kosiniak-Kamysz explained that Poland will transfer weapons and equipment that are no longer critically needed by its own army. “We are continuing what we started in 2022—both our predecessors and we ourselves. We are transferring what is possible—what the armed forces say: ‘Yes, for example, we won’t be using this,’” said the Polish minister.
He added that this refers, in particular, to equipment that is being phased out or has reached the end of its service life. “We are preparing the most essential aid and equipment that is being phased out or has reached the end of its service life—equipment that would no longer be used in Poland but could be put to good use in Ukraine,” explained Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Poland has not specified the exact types of weapons
So far, the Polish side has not disclosed exactly what equipment will be included in the package. The defense minister emphasized that Poland is taking its own needs into account while putting together the aid. According to him, the country’s security remains the primary condition for the transfer of military equipment to Ukraine.
In other words, Warsaw is ready to transfer equipment that the Ukrainian military can use effectively, but not at the expense of its own defense capabilities. The package also includes air defense systems. This is particularly important given the intensification of Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine.
The aid was agreed upon at “Ramstein”
The new Polish aid package was one of the outcomes of the 36th meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine’s Defense. During the meeting, partners announced new contributions to the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Germany pledged additional interceptor missiles for the Patriot system, F-16 fighter jets, and the purchase of drones. The United Kingdom allocated 100 million pounds for U.S. weapons and announced the delivery of an additional 95,000 drones by the end of the year. The Netherlands pledged $300 million for drone production and 300 anti-drone missiles.
Ukraine’s primary request to its allies was to strengthen its air defense capabilities. On the eve of the meeting, Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara named air defense and additional funding for defense needs as Kyiv’s top priorities. The need for such systems has grown particularly acute due to the expected intensification of Russian attacks in the fall and winter. Germany has already announced additional missiles for the Patriot system, while the United Kingdom has announced a package to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, which will include interceptor missiles, specifically for the Patriot system.
Poland Continues Military Support for Ukraine
Warsaw has remained one of Ukraine’s key partners since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. This is not the first time Poland has transferred equipment to Ukraine that it is replacing with more modern models. This approach allows the Ukrainian army to receive additional weapons, while the Polish army can gradually update its own stockpiles.
This time, particular emphasis was placed on air defense. This is especially important for Ukraine, as Russian forces continue to use large numbers of attack drones and missiles. At the same time, the Polish side has not yet specified the exact list of equipment or the timeline for its transfer. It is known only that the total value of the new package will amount to 50 million euros, and part of the aid will be directed toward strengthening Ukraine’s air defense.
