Poland is awaiting Kyiv's response following the decision regarding the UPA
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that he expects a “clear signal” from Ukraine to ease tensions in bilateral relations. According to him, this was prompted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to name one of the units after the heroes of the UPA.
At the same time, Tusk noted that he has already received positive signals from Ukrainian politicians and hopes that Kyiv will take the first step toward resolving the situation. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the latest escalation in Polish-Ukrainian relations. During a press conference in Kleczew, he stated that Warsaw is counting on a clear position from Kyiv following the decision to name one of the Ukrainian units after the heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
According to Tusk, he has recently received several positive signals from the Ukrainian side. In particular, the Polish prime minister mentioned a letter from Ukraine’s third president, Viktor Yushchenko. “The former president of Ukraine addressed me with a very sincere appeal in a letter, urging us to try to work together on this past and to ensure that the past does not determine the future. Because if the past continues to guide us, the future will not be easy,” said Donald Tusk.
At the same time, he emphasized that Poland is awaiting an official response from the Ukrainian authorities. “We expect Ukraine to take the first step following President Zelenskyy’s unfortunate decision. It would be good to hear a very clear signal from Kyiv. They are trying, but we would still like to hear it clearly and confidently,” said the head of the Polish government.
Tusk did not specify exactly what actions Warsaw expects, but he made it clear that he considers Ukraine to be the party that must take the first step to ease tensions. At the same time, the Polish prime minister emphasized that the messages he has received from current and former Ukrainian politicians indicate a willingness to engage in dialogue. In his view, historical issues should not determine the future of relations between the two countries.
The issue of historical memory—particularly the assessment of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army’s activities—has remained one of the most sensitive topics in relations between Ukraine and Poland for many years. Despite this, both countries continue to cooperate in the areas of security, defense, and support for Ukraine during the full-scale war. This was reported by Polsat News.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that the development of Polish-Ukrainian relations must be based on mutual goodwill. According to him, constructive dialogue is impossible if only one side demonstrates a willingness to cooperate.
