Poland will strengthen its electronic security along the border with Ukraine
Poland plans to equip more than 100 km of its land border with Ukraine with an electronic security system. The system will complement physical barriers and include, among other things, monitoring devices and motion detectors.
Brigadier General Violeta Gorzkówska, deputy chief commander of the Polish Border Guard, spoke about the planned investments during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on administration and internal affairs.
According to Violeta Gorzkówska, one of the projects involves electronic protection of 69 km of the border within the area of responsibility of the Nadbużański Division of the Polish Border Guard.
Another 43 km of the land border with Ukraine is planned to be secured in the area of responsibility of the Bieszczady Department.
“These are our immediate plans,” said Violeta Gorzhkowska.
Thus, the total length of the sections planned for electronic surveillance is 112 km.
In addition to the Ukrainian border, Poland plans to expand its security systems along the borders with Russia and Belarus.
Specifically, this involves observation towers equipped with optoelectronic systems. Plans also include installing systems to detect drones along the Polish-Belarusian border.
Poland is already developing the electronic component of its eastern border security. Government sources report the use of monitoring systems, protective infrastructure, and countermeasures against drones.
Funding for the planned investments to strengthen border infrastructure is to be provided by the European Union.
At the same time, according to Violeta Gorzkówska, due to Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of the law on the use of funds from the SAFE program, the Border Guard was unable to carry out planned procurements worth 3 billion zlotys.
This specifically involved the purchase of armored vehicles and machine guns. Following the presidential veto, the Polish government announced its intention to finance the necessary procurements for the services directly from the state budget.
Thus, Poland plans to simultaneously strengthen both the physical and electronic components of the security of its eastern borders, particularly the more than 100 km of border with Ukraine.
The Polish Ministry of Finance has prepared legislative amendments that provide for the introduction of an electronic reservation system for freight transport at border crossings. The new rules will apply to shipments traveling from Poland to the European Union’s external border.
Poland has begun constructing new fortifications and reinforcing border crossing points along the border with Ukraine due to the growing threat from Russia. In particular, new observation posts will be built in Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korczowa.
