Poland signs $4 billion US financing deal to purchase weapons
Poland has signed a $4 billion loan guarantee agreement with the United States under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program to purchase American military equipment. The amount is around 14.8 billion zlotys, and the funds will be provided through Poland’s Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK), Notes from Poland reports.
Sixth round of FMF financing
Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz called the agreement an important step in modernizing the Polish armed forces and strengthening the strategic partnership between Warsaw and Washington. According to him, the new financing is intended to accelerate the implementation of existing contracts, including those for Apache attack helicopters.
This is the sixth time Poland has received financing under the FMF program, with its total amount for the country reaching nearly $20 billion. The US Embassy in Warsaw stated that the agreement confirms the strength of the two states’ partnership in strengthening NATO, deterring aggression, and supporting peace and security in Europe.

Apache helicopters and financing terms
In 2024, Poland signed a $10 billion contract to purchase 96 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. The agreement also includes logistics and training packages, ammunition, and spare parts. Once the contract is fulfilled, Poland is expected to become the world’s second-largest Apache operator after the United States.
The terms of the new financing were not disclosed. BGK Vice President Marta Postuła said the agreement is more favorable than the two previous FMF loan guarantee agreements because the US government provided a grant to subsidize part of the financing costs.
Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, an aggressor state, in 2022, Poland significantly increased its defense procurement. In 2021–2025, the country was the largest arms importer among NATO members, with approximately 44% of its purchases coming from the United States, including Abrams tanks, Patriot air defense batteries, and HIMARS rocket systems.
