Michaël Vandevert, a 28-year-old influencer who defied doctors' predictions despite suffering from a rare disease, has died
Belgian blogger Michiel Vandevert, from the town of Diepenbeek, passed away at the age of 28. As a child, he was diagnosed with progeria (Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome)—a rare, incurable genetic disorder that causes accelerated aging. According to doctors’ predictions, the boy was expected to live only until age 12, but he exceeded their expectations by more than double.
Michiel gained popularity thanks to his active presence on social media (Instagram, YouTube, Twitch), where he had over 90,000 followers. He worked as a DJ, created gaming content—for which he received the “Jamie” Award—and spoke openly about living with a serious illness.
At age 15, he published an autobiographical book titled *I Am Michiel*, and together with his 20-year-old sister Amber, who also has the same diagnosis, he starred in the documentary *How to Be Alive: Amber and Michiel*. Numerous fans and local officials have expressed their condolences following his death.
