The U.S. has lost a quarter of its Reaper strike drones in the war with Iran
The U.S. military lost about 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones during the war with Iran. This is roughly a quarter of the total fleet of such drones that the U.S. had at the start of the conflict.
During the war with Iran, the U.S. Air Force lost approximately 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones. Before the conflict began, the U.S. military had about 185 of these aircraft. In other words, approximately one-quarter of the entire Reaper fleet was lost during the hostilities.
The drones were actively deployed over Iranian territory and near the Strait of Hormuz. Some were shot down by Iranian air defenses, while others were damaged or destroyed directly at U.S. military bases during Iranian strikes.
Why the Reapers Proved Vulnerable
One of the main challenges for U.S. drones was Iran’s air defense. The MQ-9 Reaper is primarily designed for reconnaissance and strikes against ground targets. It can remain airborne for long periods but lacks high speed and typically operates at altitudes where it can be detected and attacked by air defense systems.
That is why, during intense combat operations over Iran, these drones proved to be significantly more vulnerable than in conflicts where the enemy has weaker air defense systems. Due to significant losses, the U.S. has already begun looking for ways to replenish its fleet more quickly. In particular, the U.S. military has been purchasing remaining MQ-9 Reapers from the manufacturer General Atomics’ warehouses.
The losses could cost more than $1.3 billion
According to The Washington Post, a single MQ-9 Reaper system can cost up to $50 million. If losses do indeed amount to about 45 drones, their total value could exceed $1.3 billion.
However, the problem is not just the cost. It is difficult to quickly replace dozens of lost drones, as manufacturing new ones takes time. Moreover, the U.S. must simultaneously supply Reapers for other military operations around the world. Therefore, heavy losses in Iran place an additional strain on U.S. stockpiles.
The U.S. Is Looking for Cheaper Drones
The war with Iran has already affected more than just the drone fleet. The U.S. military has also faced a reduction in stockpiles of certain types of expensive ammunition. As a result, the Pentagon is urging defense contractors to ramp up weapons production more quickly.
Against this backdrop, the U.S. has begun looking into cheaper drones that can be deployed in large numbers and are not as costly to replace in the event of losses. The Pentagon, however, declined to comment on the report by The Washington Post. The U.S. Department of Defense has also previously denied reports that U.S. weapons stockpiles are allegedly running out quickly.
What Is Known About the MQ-9 Reaper
The MQ-9 Reaper is a reconnaissance and strike drone manufactured by the American company General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. It is used or is in service with the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Denmark, India, Japan, and other countries.
The Reaper can climb to an altitude of approximately 13,000 meters and remain airborne for up to 24 hours. The drone is capable of conducting reconnaissance missions and striking ground targets. Among the weapons it can carry are AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, Mark 82 guided bombs, and other munitions.
The heavy losses of Reapers in a war with Iran highlight one of the main challenges of modern warfare: even an expensive, high-tech drone can quickly become vulnerable when operating against an enemy with a powerful air defense system. The Washington Post reports on this.
The U.S. has sufficient military resources to maintain a naval blockade of Iran indefinitely. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagseth stated that American ships can continuously rotate in the region, so Washington is capable of maintaining pressure on Tehran for as long as necessary.
