More than 30 lawmakers are set to leave Jarosław Kaczyński's party — Polsat News
The leader of the Polish opposition party “Law and Justice” (PiS), Jarosław Kaczyński, stated that more than 30 members of the party will leave its ranks after refusing to sign a declaration confirming they are not members of organizations engaged in political activities.
According to Kaczyński, all party members were warned in advance about the need to sign the document and the consequences of refusal.
“About 30-plus members of our party have left its ranks. The fact is clear: everyone knew they had to sign, and at the same time, everyone knew what the consequences of refusing to sign would be,” he said at a press conference.
Among those who refused to sign the declaration is former Polish Prime Minister and PiS Vice President Mateusz Morawiecki.
In April, he founded the “Development Plus” faction within the party, explaining that its goal was to expand the political force’s electoral support. Dozens of PiS lawmakers joined the new faction.
However, the party leadership demanded that by midnight on July 23, all lawmakers confirm in writing that they are not members of political groups such as “Development Plus.”
Kaczyński stated that he views the activities of this coalition as part of a plan to split the party. According to him, proposals for reforms could have been implemented within PiS, but this option was rejected.
Meanwhile, Morawiecki stated on Friday that he has no intention of leaving the party. He offered to step down from his position as vice president and remain an ordinary member of PiS, emphasizing that party members should not be forced to sign additional declarations.
The political crisis within “Law and Justice” is unfolding a little more than a year before Poland’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for the fall of 2027.
