More than a thousand lawyers have called for a ban on Alternative for Germany

More than 1,000 German lawyers have appealed to the federal government and members of the Bundestag to initiate proceedings to ban the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) through the Federal Constitutional Court.

The initiative was supported by 1,051 lawyers. In an open letter, the authors state that the AfD’s policies contradict the principles of human dignity and democracy enshrined in Germany’s Basic Law.

“The Basic Law provides us with the tool of a party ban, which must finally be applied,” said Angela Furmaniak, chair of the Republican Association of Lawyers.

A motion to ban the party may be filed by the federal government, the Bundestag, or the Bundesrat. The final decision is made by the Federal Constitutional Court, and the proceedings themselves may take several years.

“Alternative for Germany” opposes military aid to Ukraine, calls for the restoration of relations with Russia, and has repeatedly faced criticism for its pro-Russian stance.

Sven Schulze, the prime minister of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, has called on the governing CDU/CSU coalition to conclude personnel discussions at the federal level as quickly as possible, so that they do not disrupt the campaign ahead of the state parliamentary elections. Voting in Saxony-Anhalt is scheduled for September 6.

Two months before the Berlin House of Representatives election, the right-wing populist party “Alternative for Germany,” led by Christine Brinker, has taken the lead in the polls for the first time.
