Trump gave Iran one last chance to open the Strait of Hormuz
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the Strait of Hormuz could be fully reopened to international shipping as early as August 4. After that, he said, Washington and Tehran will move on to a new phase of negotiations focused on Iran’s nuclear program.
The U.S. president noted that the parties are actively working to restore free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the key routes for global oil trade.
“We are discussing the strait and its opening—literally by tomorrow. A full opening,” Trump said.
According to him, passage through the strait will be free for all vessels, since the U.S., as the president asserts, is in control of the situation and will not allow Iran to impose any fees.
“I will not allow them to charge any fees. They will not charge fees; we are not discussing any fees,” the White House chief emphasized.
Following the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. plans to begin a new round of negotiations with Tehran focused on nuclear security issues.
“The second phase will involve discussions about the nuclear program. Iran must be denuclearized; they cannot have nuclear weapons,” Trump stated.
Donald Trump also noted that negotiations with Iran are proceeding without significant difficulties, but he considers the current stage to be decisive for reaching an agreement.
“I want to give them one last chance before decapitation. This is their last chance to sign a good agreement. I would prefer not to carry out such a large-scale attack on this country. I hope they come to their senses,” the U.S. president said.
At the same time, Trump emphasized that the U.S. insists on Iran’s complete renunciation of the ability to develop nuclear weapons, calling this a key condition of any future agreement.
Trump made this statement during a conversation with reporters at the White House.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that negotiations between Tehran and Muscat regarding the Strait of Hormuz are entering their final stage. In a post on Telegram, he said that in a report to the government, he described the consultations with Oman as nearing completion. Iran also insists that the strait will not return to its pre-war status.
Iran announced on July 29 that its forces had struck three merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz area. The incident occurred amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and growing tensions surrounding one of the world’s key maritime routes for energy transportation.
