Despite Iran's statements, oil continued to flow through the Strait of Hormuz

Despite Iran's statements, oil continued to flow through the Strait of Hormuz

Despite Iran’s threats to block the Strait of Hormuz, oil tanker traffic continued over the weekend. According to Bloomberg estimates, approximately 8 million barrels of oil may have been transported through the strategic waterway. Ships passed through the strait along the coast of Oman, away from Iranian waters.

Tehran’s statements about a new blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have not yet led to a halt in oil shipments. Over the past weekend, large oil tankers continued to pass through one of the world’s most important maritime routes.

This was reported by Bloomberg, which tracked the ships’ movements. According to the agency’s estimates, approximately 8 million barrels of oil could have been transported through the strait on Saturday and Sunday alone. This involved five fully loaded supertankers that were either entering the Strait of Hormuz or were already transiting it. The vessels stayed closer to the coast of Oman, meaning they sailed as far away as possible from Iran’s territorial waters.

Thus, one of the key routes for global oil exports effectively remained operational, despite Tehran’s high-profile statements. Iran had previously announced that it would once again block the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran attributed this to the continuation of Israeli strikes against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon.

The country’s authorities stated that these actions were a response to developments in the region. At the same time, the actual situation on the sea lanes indicates that shipping has not yet been completely halted. It is worth noting that last week, the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum calling for a cessation of hostilities. The document addressed not only the direct confrontation between the parties but also related conflicts, particularly in Lebanon. “The memorandum called for a cessation of all hostilities, including in Lebanon,” the statement noted.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important transport corridors for the global oil market. A significant portion of global energy exports passes through it, so any statements about blocking it immediately attract the attention of traders, governments, and international companies. For now, the market is closely monitoring developments, as further escalation in the Middle East could affect not only the safety of shipping but also global oil prices and the stability of supplies, according to Bloomberg.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that no tariffs will be imposed in the Strait of Hormuz during a 60-day ceasefire period, nor after its conclusion—provided that a corresponding agreement is reached.
