South African Ambassador to France Found Dead in Paris

South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, was found dead outside the Hyatt hotel in Paris. French prosecutors said suicide is being considered as a possible cause, though investigators are examining all circumstances. His wife reported him missing after receiving a “worrying message.”

According to the Financial Times

The diplomat’s death occurred amid a high-profile corruption scandal. Mthethwa had been named in an investigation into political assassinations and alleged sabotage of inquiries in South Africa. Police found a forced-open security window in his hotel room, raising further suspicion.

Mthethwa had served as a minister for 15 years, including as police chief under President Jacob Zuma and later as minister of culture. In 2024, he was appointed ambassador to France. South Africa’s foreign ministry expressed “deep sorrow and regret,” while French authorities continue their investigation.
