The Russian Ambassador to Belgrade has accused the EU of "interfering" in Serbia's political situation

The Russian Ambassador to Belgrade has accused the EU of "interfering" in Serbia's political situation

Alexander Bozan-Kharchenko, the Russian Federation’s ambassador to Serbia, has accused the European Union of allegedly attempting to remove Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić from power.

This was reported by Russian media.

According to the Russian diplomat, as the elections in Serbia approach, protest activity is expected to intensify, which, in his opinion, has “external support.”

Botsan-Kharchenko claims that the protests may be organized and supported by the EU and “circles associated with it.”

“Many may disagree with me, pointing out that there were no symbols, flags, or other EU insignia during Saturday’s protest. They were absent because this symbolism is associated with the old, so-called opposition, which has discredited itself. The new opposition wants to show that it has nothing in common with them. And I am still convinced that this is a kind of cover-up,” he stated.

The Russian ambassador also claims that the European Union’s goal is to change Serbia’s political leadership and remove President Vučić.

“Then, closer to the elections or following the election results, the European Union will naturally reveal its true intentions, which are to remove Aleksandar Vučić and the ruling elite consolidated around him,” said Bozan-Kharchenko.

Meanwhile, large-scale protests continue in Serbia itself, having begun after the tragedy in Novi Sad in November 2024, when 16 people were killed in the collapse of a railway overpass. The movement subsequently grew into broader anti-government demonstrations demanding political change.

In 2025–2026, the protest movement in the country continues to develop, encompassing increasingly broader social groups and political demands.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that he may resign in the near future.

Prior to this, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his intention to hold early parliamentary elections. According to him, the vote could take place between late September and mid-November.
