There has been a change in leadership at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. Career diplomat Sandra Audkirk has been named the new Chargé d’Affaires of the United States. In this role, Audkirk succeeded Julie Davis, who had been serving as the head of the U.S. diplomatic mission.

Over 30 Years of Diplomatic Service

The embassy noted that Sandra Audkirk is a member of the senior corps of the U.S. Foreign Service and has over three decades of international experience. During this time, she has worked both in Washington and in various countries around the world, addressing issues of security, international policy, and cooperation with U.S. allies. “Sandra Audkirk is a career diplomat with over 30 years of international experience,” the embassy stated.

She worked at the Pentagon

Prior to her appointment to Ukraine, the diplomat worked at the U.S. Department of Defense. Since 2024, she has served as deputy director of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies and as a foreign policy advisor to U.S. European Command. In these roles, she focused on international security, cooperation with European partners, and foreign policy planning.

She headed the American Institute in Taiwan

Another important milestone in Audkirk’s career was her work in Taiwan. From 2021 to 2024, she headed the American Institute in Taiwan, which effectively serves as the U.S. diplomatic mission on the island. Prior to that, she served in U.S. missions around the world and has extensive experience working in Asia and Europe.

She focused on sanctions and energy security

While working in Washington, Sandra Audkirk was responsible for a number of important international issues. These included strategic competition between states, energy security, economic sanctions, and combating the financing of threats to international security.

According to diplomatic circles, this experience was one of the factors behind her new appointment.

She has worked in various countries around the world

Over the course of her diplomatic career, Audkirk has served in several countries. In particular, she carried out diplomatic missions in Taipei, Dublin, Ankara, Istanbul, and Beijing.

This international experience has enabled her to address not only security issues but also political and economic relations between nations.

Education and Language Skills

Sandra Audkirk graduated from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University—one of the most renowned institutions in the United States in the field of international relations. In addition to English, she is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) and Turkish, which has repeatedly helped her during her diplomatic work abroad.

Sandra Audkirk will now represent the United States in Ukraine as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim and will oversee the work of the U.S. Embassy until a new ambassador is appointed. The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine announced her appointment.

A bipartisan bill to strengthen sanctions against Russia, introduced by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, already has enough co-sponsors to pass in the U.S. Senate. However, the timeline for its consideration remains uncertain at this time.
