NPP representative calls for bail for nurse Baffoe in Ghana — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, Regina Bempong, the organizer of the women’s wing of the New Patriotic Party in the Eastern Region, called on the Attorney General and the police Criminal Investigations Department to help secure bail for senior nurse Salomey Aviti Baffoe. The woman is being held in custody in connection with the case known as Ghana Jollof, MyJoyOnline reports.

Denial of bail

On September 17, 2026, the Adentan court remanded Baffoe in custody on a charge of abetment. Her bail application was rejected by the High Court in Accra on September 24.

Bempong said the nurse’s continued detention was unjustified, particularly because she has three children and the charge concerns a misdemeanor. The NPP representative also stressed that Baffoe should be considered innocent until her guilt is proven.

Arguments for release

According to Bempong, the possibility of interference with electronic evidence should not be grounds for Baffoe’s continued detention. She noted that police had seized the nurse’s two mobile phones and, according to law enforcement, gained access to them.

Bempong called for reasonable bail conditions to be set for Baffoe while the investigation continues. She also appealed to Ghana’s Chief Justice to urgently consider a submission by Baffoe’s lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, regarding the holding of a Court of Appeal hearing on the matter of her freedom. In addition, the NPP representative called on women’s organizations, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, FIDA, and civil society organizations to speak out on the case.
