British Prime Minister Burnham prepares for Berlin visit — Politico Europe

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is preparing to visit Berlin, Germany, in early October for talks with Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Politico Europe reports on the preparations for the visit, citing two sources familiar with the plans.

This will be Burnham’s first trip to Germany since taking office as prime minister in July. He assumed the post on July 20, replacing Keir Starmer. At the same time, the British prime minister’s office and the German chancellor’s office declined to comment on the upcoming meeting.

Cooperation in defense

London and Berlin have strengthened bilateral relations over the past two years, particularly in the defense sector. In October 2024, the countries concluded the Trinity House agreement, which created a framework for closer military and defense-industrial cooperation. Since then, the sides have expanded work on joint weapons development projects and military coordination.

In July 2025, the governments signed the Kensington Treaty, which provides for deeper cooperation in defense and security, the economy, transport, and migration. The United Kingdom and Germany also remain among the main European states supporting Ukraine.

Domestic political pressure in Germany

The talks may take place amid domestic political pressure on Merz’s government. The Christian Democrats suffered significant losses in two state elections this month, while support for the far-right Alternative for Germany party is growing. According to Politico’s polling aggregator, AfD has 28% support, while the Christian Democrats have 20%.
