Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez calls for UN Security Council reform — Anadolu Agency

In Türkiye, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for reform of the UN Security Council during his speech at the UN General Assembly. He proposed ensuring fair representation for all regions of the world and abolishing the veto power of the permanent members of the Security Council.

As reported by Anadolu Agency, Sánchez said that no country, regardless of its power, should be a judge in its own case. According to him, the foundations of the international system are increasingly being challenged.

The Spanish prime minister also said that peace, sustainable development and equal opportunities are under pressure from political figures and governments seeking to return the world to a dark past. He did not specify whom exactly he meant.

Statements on conflicts

Sánchez said that Madrid has done everything possible to counter actions that contradict the UN Charter. Among such measures, he named sanctions against Russia and an arms embargo on the Israeli government.

The Spanish prime minister also unequivocally condemned what, according to him, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to do in Gaza and what Sánchez called genocide. He added that a multilateral approach remains the best way to manage global interdependence and called for strengthening trust in the UN.
