Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif orders improved export product quality
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in Islamabad, ordered effective measures to ensure that the quality of Pakistani products meets international standards and helps increase exports. He issued the directive during a meeting on boosting exports and accelerating economic growth, Dawn reports.
Product quality and support for exporters
Sharif called for making the quality assurance system more effective and ensuring full compliance with international standards and regulations. According to him, export growth should become the foundation of the country’s economic development, and not only Pakistan’s traditionally established sectors should be prepared to operate in global markets.
The prime minister also stressed the need to involve as many sectors and industries as possible in export activities in order to diversify trade. He emphasized the importance of creating added value and instructed the development of modern technologies, research and innovation in export industries.
Separately, the head of government ordered the removal of administrative and business obstacles faced by exporters. The export process, he said, should become simpler, faster and more transparent.

Access to international markets
The meeting reviewed the implementation of the approved strategic roadmap for export promotion. Participants also discussed proposals for entering new global markets, diversifying export sectors, improving product quality and facilitating business.
Government representatives said they were taking steps to expand Pakistani goods’ access to global markets through free trade agreements and preferential trade arrangements with friendly countries. The authorities are also working to include horticultural products in exports and are encouraging exporters of surgical and medical instruments to participate in tenders held by international hospitals.
According to data presented at the meeting, Texpo, Hems and FoodAg exhibitions have already been held in various cities to familiarize international companies with Pakistani goods. The authorities are also working to bring intellectual property legislation in line with modern needs in order to support innovation in exports. The restructuring of the Export Development Fund has been completed, and the fund itself is taking measures to support the business community.
Foreign trade indicators
In the first month of the 2026–2027 financial year, Pakistan’s merchandise exports rose by 9.54%, while the trade deficit increased due to higher imports. In the previous financial year, the country’s exports fell short of the annual target by $4.87 billion and declined by 5.97% compared with 2024–2025. Export earnings also decreased by 5.97% compared with $32.04 billion a year earlier.
