Pakistan’s PM calls for implementation of US-Iran memorandum — Dawn
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York, United States, stressed the need to implement the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran. The talks took place on September 24 on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
As Dawn reports, the agreement consists of 14 points and was signed by the United States and Iran in June; Pakistan also signed it as a mediator. The document set out a framework for ending the ongoing conflict. According to the publication, the conflict did not end afterwards: isolated strikes continued, the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports, and Iran retained control over traffic through the strategic waterway.
Call for de-escalation
Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office said that Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep concern over the protracted conflict and called for restraint, de-escalation and sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.

According to the Pakistani side, the prime minister also reaffirmed Islamabad’s readiness to continue playing a constructive role in supporting regional peace and security. The Prime Minister’s Office also said that Pezeshkian noted Pakistan’s principled diplomacy and its efforts to achieve peace and security in the region.
Bilateral contacts
The sides agreed to maintain regular consultations and close coordination, as well as work towards peace, security and prosperity in the region. They reaffirmed their intention to strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and Iran in all areas of mutual interest.
The meeting was also attended by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Shehbaz Sharif and Masoud Pezeshkian previously met in August in Kyrgyzstan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit.
