Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has resigned along with her government

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has officially submitted her resignation to the Saeima. The entire government has resigned along with her.

The decision became known following a special broadcast by LSM, during which Edmunds Jurevics, leader of the “New Unity” faction, confirmed the information.

Just the day before, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis had stated that Silina had no plans to step down. At the same time, parliament was already actively discussing the possibility of a no-confidence vote against the government.

Andris Šuvajevs, leader of the “Progressives” faction, warned that if a vote of no confidence in the prime minister were held, the government could lose parliamentary support.

The opposition was preparing an unusual mechanism to oust the head of government. According to the Seimas’s rules of procedure, a no-confidence vote is typically adopted no earlier than five days after the submission of the relevant motion. However, lawmakers planned to use the unfinished parliamentary session from May 7 to expedite the procedure.

On Thursday morning, at the prime minister’s request, a one-hour recess was announced in parliament. After the session resumed, the Sejm speaker did not explain the reasons for the break, and lawmakers awaited Silini’s address.

However, the prime minister did not address parliament. Instead, she held a press conference at the Cabinet of Ministers, where she officially announced her resignation.

The government’s resignation could lead to new coalition talks and the formation of a new Cabinet in Latvia.
