The Czech President Criticized His Role in the Delegation to the NATO Summit

Czech President Petr Pavel has expressed his disagreement with the government’s decision regarding the format of his participation in the July NATO summit in Ankara.

According to him, the role assigned to him within the delegation does not correspond to his authority as head of state, which is why he has publicly voiced his dissatisfaction.

In the opinion of the Czech head of state, the government’s move contradicts a previous ruling by the Constitutional Court.

“The government’s approach to the issue of the president’s participation in the summit in Ankara contradicts the ruling of the Constitutional Court. The court ordered the government not only to provide the necessary accreditation but also to refrain from any actions that would hinder or complicate the participation of the president and his entourage,” Pavel stated.

In his view, the government should act in accordance with existing practice until the court issues a final ruling. According to Pavel, the president should be able to represent the Czech Republic as head of the national delegation both at the informal leaders’ dinner and at the North Atlantic Council meeting.

However, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced at a press conference on Monday that the delegation will be led by the prime minister, not the president. “We are convinced that the government delegation should be represented at both the informal dinner and the main meeting, just as we had planned prior to the Constitutional Court’s decision,” Babiš said.

Pavel, however, insists that he must be present at either the informal dinner or the official meeting. “With this decision, the government is also failing to adhere to protocol customs in organizing the NATO summit,” the president noted, adding that he is proposing a compromise. “The prime minister will choose one of the two meetings of heads of state at the summit, and the president will attend the other,” Pavel stated.

“Despite the government’s undesirable actions, I am still ready to seek a solution that complies with the Constitution, the Constitutional Court’s previous ruling, and protocol customs, and that will allow the president and the prime minister to fulfill their duties,” the head of state noted.

This is stated in the president’s statement.

Peace in Europe can no longer be taken for granted, says Petr Pavel.

Russia has launched large-scale nuclear exercises to demonstrate its strength to Ukraine’s allies, increase pressure on NATO, and divert attention from its own failures on the front lines. This is the conclusion reached by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation officially announced the start of large-scale military exercises involving strategic nuclear forces, which will take place from May 19 to 21, 2026

Ukraine reacted sharply to the joint nuclear exercises between Russia and Belarus, declaring them a violation of international treaties and a threat to global security. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Moscow is effectively turning Belarus into a nuclear springboard near NATO’s borders.
