Egyptian President el-Sisi rejects plans to relocate Palestinians

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, during a visit by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said that Cairo rejects any plans to relocate Palestinians. He also reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering position against attempts to eliminate the Palestinian cause, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.

Egypt's position

Egypt has the only land border with the Gaza Strip that is not controlled by Israel. Since 2023, Cairo has rejected plans to relocate Gaza's population, which exceeds 2 million people, to the Sinai Peninsula.

Last year, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said that Cairo had rejected several proposals to write off part of its substantial external debt in exchange for allowing the mass relocation of Palestinians to Egyptian territory.

Statements by Israel Katz

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the same day that the resumption of full-scale war in Gaza was only a matter of time. According to him, this would make it possible to complete the operation and implement the migration plan.

Earlier this month, Katz said that Israel was ready to take Palestinians out of Gaza by sea and land, but was waiting for the United States. According to the minister, the U.S. side had discussed where 2 million people could be accommodated. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee denied the existence of a plan to relocate Gaza residents against their will.

The publication notes that almost the entire population of the Gaza Strip has been internally displaced, while a significant part of the territory has been destroyed after three years of war. According to data cited by Asharq Al-Awsat, more than 73,700 Palestinians have been killed. The war began after a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which 1,221 people were killed, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data.
