Fires in Nigeria caused losses of 2.5 billion naira — Premium Times Nigeria
In Nigeria’s Cross River State, property estimated at 2.5 billion naira was lost as a result of 17 fires recorded from January to September 2026. Six people were injured, and there were no fatalities in these incidents. The fire destroyed six buildings.
Cross River State Fire Service Commander Olumayowa Olumola reported these figures in Calabar in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, as reported by Premium Times Nigeria.
Fire locations
According to Olumola, fires broke out at various locations across the state, including private homes, the governor’s office, an educational institution, a market, a timber warehouse, a shopping centre, a location where fuel was being discharged from a tanker truck, and an industrial facility.

Challenges facing the fire service
The commander named inadequate security, a shortage of operational vehicles and diesel fuel among the main obstacles to the service’s work. According to her, firefighters do not have firearms and may therefore be vulnerable to attacks by crowds while responding to emergencies.
Olumola mentioned an incident on January 11 in the Goldie Market area of Calabar, when service personnel were attacked while responding to an emergency call. She also noted a shortage of fire tankers, ambulances and service vehicles, and called for regular supplies of diesel fuel for vehicles and other equipment.
