Egyptian President el-Sisi calls for preserving freedom of international navigation
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India, called for preserving stability and freedom of international navigation amid rising tensions in the Middle East. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.
Statement at the BRICS summit
During a closed session of the summit, el-Sisi said that events in the Middle East are negatively affecting the global economy, trade, energy flows and supply chains. According to him, this confirms the close link between security and development.
The president noted that Egypt, given its strategic location and role in global trade, understands the importance of stability and freedom of international navigation. He called on BRICS countries to develop concrete projects and programs to support the Sustainable Development Goals, diversify sources of growth, increase productivity and reduce development and technology gaps.

El-Sisi also expressed Cairo's desire to chair BRICS in the near future. He confirmed Egypt's readiness to work closely with the member states of the association in all areas in order to turn their potential into partnerships that support development and shared interests.
Red Sea and Suez Canal
This was the Egyptian president's second public call for stability of international maritime routes within 24 hours. The day before, during a meeting with Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin, the leader of an aggressor state, on the sidelines of the summit, el-Sisi stressed the importance of stability amid regional crises, particularly regarding waterways through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
According to the agency, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted due to the consequences of the war between the United States and Iran, which began in February. The Iran-linked Houthi group is also advancing toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, raising concerns about navigation through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
