Israeli President Herzog holds Sukkot event in Jerusalem — Jerusalem Post

Israeli President Isaac Herzog and his wife Michal held an annual open event for the Sukkot holiday in Jerusalem. The program was mainly aimed at children and included sports and cultural activities, The Jerusalem Post reports.

A smaller-scale celebration

This year’s event differed from previous years with a smaller exhibition area and restricted access to part of the presidential complex. The main activities took place in the front part of the complex, while festive events had previously also been held in its rear section. The festive sukkah, which in past years was decorated with flowers, fruit and vegetables, was designed much more modestly this time.

According to the publication, there were fewer visitors than at similar events in the past. Early visitors who arrived at 9:30 found the organizers preparing the venues. After the preparations were completed, Isaac and Michal Herzog toured the displays, spoke with participants and took photographs with guests.

Children’s activities and sports

The presidential couple paid special attention to wheelchair athletes playing basketball, as well as to an exhibition of specialized wheelchairs for people who cannot walk or stand. The Herzogs welcomed visitors, took selfies and posed for photographs with children.

Sports activities, a drum ensemble performance and outdoor storytelling were organized for children. Episodes from Israeli films, including Zot hi Ha’aretz, Eskimo Lemon and Kazablan, were also recreated on small stages.

Herzog said he was pleased to welcome different groups of Israeli society to an event dedicated to culture and sports. Speaking about the upcoming Knesset elections, he said that Sukkot gives Israelis an opportunity to gather and talk, after which everyone will go together to vote in democratic elections.
