Cyprus President Christodoulides calls start of 2028 race premature — Cyprus Mail

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said in Nicosia that it is still too early to start the election race ahead of the 2028 presidential election. He said this on Tuesday upon arriving at the Cyprus Forum, Cyprus Mail reports.

Elections scheduled for February 2028

Commenting on developments within the DISY party, Christodoulides stressed that everyone has the right to announce their candidacy. At the same time, he recalled that it is now September 2026 and that Cyprus's presidential election is not due to take place until February 2028.

According to the president, in parliamentary democracies such a period amounts to roughly half of a government's term in office. He said he does not question the right of citizens or political parties to begin an election campaign, but believes it is still far too early to do so.

DISY candidates

Christodoulides' statement came after DISY leader Annita Demetriou announced on Monday that she was putting herself forward to seek the party's nomination for the presidential election. Former DISY leader Averof Neophytou has also announced his candidacy.

The Cyprus president added that the country is facing serious challenges and that the executive branch seeks to cooperate with the legislative branch to find solutions to problems affecting citizens.
